Head of Outreach and Communications at Netnod, Nurani Nimpuno is pleased to serve on the Nominating Committee which selects representatives of the Internet technical community for the renewal of the Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG). Ms. Nimpuno served on the MAG 2009-2013, as a representative of the technical community.

About the MAG

The Secretary-General of the United Nations established the Advisory Group (now referred to as the Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG). Its purpose is to advise  the Secretary General on the programme and schedule of  the Internet Governance Forum meetings. The MAG comprises of Members from governments, the private sector and civil society, including representatives from the academic and technical communities. The MAG holds meetings three times a year at the Palais des Nations in Geneva and is preceded by open consultations meetings.

Selection and Operation principles stated by the UN:

  • MAG members are selected to achieve a balance among all stakeholder groups, while retaining regional and gender representation, according to established procedures;
  • All MAG members serve in their personal capacity but are expected to have extensive linkages with their respective stakeholder groups;
  • The main task of MAG is to provide advice on the programme and main themes of the next meeting of the IGF;
  • MAG members are expected to attend two to three MAG meetings in Geneva, Switzerland, in addition to the annual IGF meeting. They should participate actively in the preparatory process throughout the year, through engagement in the online multilateral dialogue among MAG members;
  • MAG meetings are open to Intergovernmental organizations. 

Criteria used by the NomCom for the technical community:

  • Any suggestions of names are welcome. Among the criteria necessary for the function it would make sense for the candidates to:
  • Respect the “Principles for the technical representation in the formulation and implementation of effective Internet governance”
  • Enjoy the respect of the community as a technical expert and/or technical community representative;
  • Technical expertise, knowledge and understand of the work of the technical community;
  • Be experienced with IGF and institutional Internet Governance processes;
  • Be experienced in meeting procedures, effective communication and productive participation;
  • Ability and willingness to travel to MAG meetings;
  • Contribute to the MAG’s gender and geographical balance.
