Netnod’s Precision Time Protocol service expands to Luleå

Stockholm, 21 June 2021 - Netnod, a leading provider of interconnection (IX), DNS, and time and frequency services, today announced that their Precision Time Protocol (PTP) service is now available from a new node in Luleå. In addition to the PTP service available in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Malmö, Gothenburg, Sundsvall and Gävle, organisations can now connect to Netnod’s PTP service from Luleå in the north of Sweden.

PTP is currently used by industries ranging from banking and financial services to telecommunications, transport and the energy sector. For networks that need the highest level of time accuracy and redundancy, Netnod’s PTP service is the most accurate, reliable and robust service available. Using Caesium atomic clocks, the service is delivered over a dedicated fibre and enables networks to time stamp with the highest degree of accuracy. It also ensures redundancy for mission critical services that rely on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).

"We are seeing an increasing need across all sectors of society for the best possible time and frequency services,” said Patrik Fältström, Technical Director and Head of Security, Netnod. “By providing PTP services from multiple nodes across the region, Netnod helps networks ensure the most accurate and robust time for their mission-critical services.”

While many networks today are dependent on the GNSS, there are a range of issues that can introduce significant errors in time and frequency measurements. These issues include signal interference, unpredictable latency, leap seconds, oscillator instabilities, rollover issues, vulnerability to attack using signal jamming and spoofing.

For mission-critical systems, these errors can be disastrous. As a result, a variety of government agencies and industry bodies recommend that organisations have a reliable secondary source of time. For organisations based mainly in Sweden, Netnod’s PTP service ensures networks the most reliable and accurate time available traceable to UTC(SP).
