Netnod / Autonomica responds to NTIA's intent to proceed with DNSSEC in the root.
Netnod / Autonomica has submitted a response to NTIA's
Public Notice: "Intent to Proceed with the Final Stages
of Domain Name System Security Extensions Implementation
in the Authoritative Root Zone", expressing our support to
proceed with the full deployment of DNSSEC in the root zone.
-----
Dear Ms. Alexander
Autonomica AB operates one of Internet's 13 public root
name servers for the DNS. As such we have wholeheartedly
participated in the deployment and testing of DNSSEC in
the root zone, orchestrated by ICANN and Verisign. We have
read the "Final Report on DNSSEC Deployment Testing and
Evaluation in the Root Zone" jointly published by ICANN and
Verisign, and in all parts where we have first hand knowledge,
we find it to be a fair and accurate description of the situation.
We have no reason to believe that the parts where we do not
have first hand knowledge are less fair or less accurate.
We concur with the notion that no harmful effects have been
observed, and we share ICANN's and Verisign's view that none
of the minor details in the testing plan that failed to meet
with full success pose concern for further deployment.
Our counclusions are fully in line with those of the NTIA,
and we warmly support its decision to proceed with full
deployment of DNSSEC in the root zone.
Finally we would like to commend the DoC, and especially
the NTIA, in its outstanding efforts to make this happen.
We also acknowledge the equally outstanding efforts by ICANN
and Verisign, and many other involved parties, and we believe
the Internet community as a whole will benefit greatly from this.
Best regards,
Autonomica AB
Kurt Erik Lindqvist, CEO

ZA Domain Name Authority and Netnod Signs
Agreement on Anycast DNS Services for .ZA
Stockholm and Johannesburg 2010-05-01.
Netnod AB and .ZA Domain Name Authority (ZADNA)
have signed an agreement for anycast DNS services
for the .ZA DNS top-level domain (TLD).
"By using anycast technology from Netnod, we will
have better resiliency and redundancy for the .ZA
domain name service, as well as better performance
for end-users." says Vika Mpisane, GM of ZADNA. "The
current agreement with Autonomica follows up on a
similar agreement that Autonomica already has for
co.za, which accounts for around 95% of .ZA domain
names. This is good news for the stability of the
.ZA namespace", adds Mpisane.
"With anycast service for .ZA, ZADNA joins the
growing number of TLDs that use our DNSNODE anycast
platform to gain better resilience and lower latency
for their end-users" says Kurt Erik Lindqvist, CEO of Netnod.
With the agreement the .ZA TLD will be serviced from
Netnod's almost 40 DNSNODE locations world wide.
Netnod and its subsidiary Autonomica operate the
Internet Exchanges in Sweden and also work on Internet
operations research, provide consultancy services around
critical infrastructure and operate a number of common
Internet services. One such service is the
i.root-servers.net service, one of the 13 DNS root
nameservers on the Internet.
"By using the Netnod DNSNODE anycast platform we are
delighted to contribute to the operation of critical
Internet infrastructure as well as help guarantee their
independence and fund future developments" said Vika
Mpisane further. "We are very happy to see our first
African TLD join the user base of the DNSNODE anycast
platform" said Mr Lindqvist, "this is a significant step
in further co-operation and support for the global
Internet community".

Red Cientifica Peruana and Netnod signs agreement on
anycast services for .PE
Stockholm and Lima 2010-05-01.
Netnod AB and Red Cientifica Peruana have signed an agreement
for anycasting services for the .PE DNS top-level domain (TLD).
“Anycasting is a technology that has been used for some time to
provide better resiliency and redundancy for DNS, which is a
critical component of the Internet. With Anycast service performance
is enhanced as the service will be delivered closer to users,”
says Rolando Toledo, CEO of Red Cientifica Peruana.
“Anycast is a technology that allows a TLD to serve their end-users
with less latency and higher resiliency, which is why we are seeing
it becoming a defacto standard for operating TLDs today” says
Kurt Erik Lindqvist, CEO of Netnod.”
With the agreement the .PE TLD will be serviced from Netnod’s almost
40 locations worldwide.
Netnod and the subsidiary company Autonomica operates the Internet
Exchanges in Sweden as well as works on research on Internet operations,
provides consultancy services around critical infrastructure and also
operates a number of common Internet services. One of these is the
i.root-servers.net, one of the thirteen root-servers on the Internet.
“The root-servers are critical infrastructure and their independence
are very important. With this agreement we can help Netnod to fund
further development and operations of the i.root-servers.net.
We are pleased to be able to contribute in this way and at the same
time gain the increased service for our TLD,” said Mr. Toledo.
“We are very happy to see support for our work from all around the
world and further strengthening our co-operation with organizations
in South America” said Mr. Lindqvist.
Netnod Internet Exchange AB in Stockholm and the subsidiary Autonomica
are non-for profit organizations that provides critical common services
for the Internet.
Red Cientifica Peruana -a non-profit organization- is the sponsoring
organization for the .PE TLD. “Our TLD has been one of the fastest
growing in the last 2 years, and with this agreement we hope to provide
a better service to our more than 40,000 users under a scheme of high
availability", said Mr. Toledo

Statement regarding the i.root-servers.net incident, March 24
As operators of i.root-servers.net, one of Internet's 13 DNS root
server systems, we would like to make the following statement
regarding the incident on March 24, where queries to the
i.root-servers.net instance in Beijing regarding certain domain names,
in some cases ostensibly produced incorrect responses.
*) Netnod/Autonomica is 100% committed to serving the root zone DNS
data as published by the IANA. We have made a clear and public
declaration of this, and we guarantee that the responses sent out
by any i.root-servers.net instance consist of the appropriate data
in the IANA root zone.
Furthermore, the identity of the source of the query does not in
any way affect the way a certain query is treated by i.root-servers.net.
http://www.netnod.se/pdf_files/autonomica-signed-mri.pdf
http://www.icann.com/correspondence/lindqvist-to-twomey-08may09-en.pdf
There was no deviation on our part from this principle on March 24.
*) Once we had determined that the incorrect replies were associated with
queries sent to our anycast node in Beijing, and we had performed some testing, we
withdrew the announcements of the i.root-servers.net service from
that location. That withdrawal remains in effect.
*) Our root server instance in Beijing, China, has *NO* special
properties that makes it different from any other instance of
i.root-servers.net. For every query it receives, a response is sent
out - a response that contains exactly the same data that any other
instance of i.root-servers.net would send out in response to the
same question.
*) We see no traces what so ever of non-Netnod/Autonomica activities on our
machines in Beijing, nor do we see any traces of malfunctioning
hardware or software on said machines.
*) As packets traverse the Internet they cross multiple service
providers, that all have access to the packets. It's impossible for
a sender to guarantee that a packet arrives as sent unless some
sort of packet content integrity mechanism is applied. In the case of DNS,
this is called DNSSEC. Had the responses to the queries been signed
with DNSSEC, and had the DNSSEC protocol been observed in the
recipient end, it would have been obvious to the recipient that the
data received was not the data published by the zone maintainers.
We also note that the use of authenticated network resource public
key infrastructure systems (RPKI) would not have helped in this
situation, as we have no reason to believe that any ISP has sent
incorrect routing information to any other ISP in this case.
We would also like to stress that the incorrect responses were ONLY
seen in response to some (but not all) queries sent towards the
i.root-servers.net instance in Beijing. We have no reports that
indicate problems with any other i.root-servers.net instance than
Beijing.
*) We are working with CNNIC, who host our installation in Beijing, to
find an explanation for the observed behaviour, and we maintain
full confidence in our host's good intentions in providing the best
of service to us and to the Internet in general.
*) We will work with CNNIC on a way to re-establish service from
Beijing in a stable and secure manner, once we know more about the
cause of the problems seen, and feel comfortable that the situation
has been rectified.
We will produce further statements as we believe we have authoritative
information

New Netnod logo online!
You might be one of them who already have run into the
new Netnod logo? It was launched it in September 2009
and it has been seen on a few conferences since then.
We have now made some changes in the colour scheme on
our website to match the new Netnod logo. The reason
why we decided to change the logo is because of a recent
name change. We have gone from using two different names;
Netnod and Autonomica to now only use Netnod.
Before Netnod was mostly used for our exchange point
services and Autonomica was associated with i.root-servers.net
and DNSNODE anycast services. But since we're really only
one organisation, we decided that using these two separate
names was simply too confusing. Some people knew us as
Netnod and others as Autonomica, without realising it was
the same people behind it all. We haven't changed anything
structurally; we are still the same people, still doing the
same thing. We just want it to be a little bit clearer who
we actually are.

Information about the problems on november the 4th
On november the 4th, Netnod experienced heavy packetloss from around
8.30 CET, lasting until approximately 19.30 CET. The causes of the
issues seems to have been multiple but mostly related to ethernet
frames being looped back to the switches, that caused the software on
the switch to run the line cards at 100% cpu load. That in turn lead
to the packet loss that was being seen. The problem was investigated
together with our switch vendor.

Netnod installs WDM system at Telecity
At the moment Netnod is in the process of installing
a WDM system at one of the Carrier neutral co-location
centres in Stockholm: The Telecity data centre in Bromma.
Since the fibre-part of the cost will decrease, we will
be able to reclassify the co-location centre from outer
city pricing to inner city pricing, which means we will
lower the prices significally for the members located at Telecity.
This change will be carried out in the next few weeks.
A channel in Netnod’s DWDM system will replace the affected
members’ fibre connections; from Telecity data centre to
Netnod Internet Exchange.
Since the member owns the internal patching at Telecity,
all members will need to order patching to the DWDM system
them selves. Members affected will receive an e-mail with
instructions on how and when to order new patching with
Telecity closer to the date of the migration.
More information to affected members will follow soon through e-mail.

EPF4 in Copenhagen 14th -15th of September
For the forth year in a row the European Peering Forum was held.
This time in Copenhagen and with Netnod as a main host. The event
brought together over 200 members from the host IXP:s AMS-IX, DE-IX,
LINX and NETNOD. The agenda was full of presentations, interactive
sessions and discussions. The content included presentations on the
Scandinavian peering landscape, QoS in IP interconnection and a
discussion on the impact of privacy legislation and data retention.
There was also a debate on Peering vs. Transit in Europe, DDoS
mitigation and an IPv6 peering panel. During the coffebreaks and
socials the attendees met with present peers and potential new
contacts. People shared experiences, did business and had a really
good time. The event was a success and the plans for next years EPF
has already started. The purpose with the annual meeting is to allow
delegates to establish and extend peering relationships as well as
share information beneficial to the whole peering community.

National Exercise on Telecommunication Infrastructure Crisis
During May 6-7, 2009, the staff at Netnod/Autonomica participates in a
National Swedish Exercise on Telecommunication Infrastructure Crisis
(Telö 09), arranged by The Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS),
where a theoretical crisis scenario based on terrorism is played out
to a group of participating Internet service providers, Telephony
operators, electrical power companies and other infrastructure related
organizations. The staff at Netnod/Autonomica and the other participating
organizations will face a number of invented problems, and are expected
to train their abilities to solve problems, prioritize, and cooperate
with business peers.
The exercise is almost purely theoretical, and no impact is expected
on any real services provided by Netnod/Autonomica. Any problems in
the real world or service requests from actual customers will have
immediate and absolute priority over the exercise.
